About

The roots of the word "essence" go back to the ancient Greek word οὐσία. This is no accident, as the Greeks were the ones whose art was embraced by the ideas of humanism. Greek humanism reinforced the belief that man's physical traits were an element of the divine. “If the gods look like us, then we look like the gods; thus, our bodies are godly.” Unlike Greek art, this is not about athleticism or standards of physical beauty. It is about the inherited nature of selfhood reflected in the human body.
Nudity is not only the absence of clothing, but also capturing the moment when one's essence comes out. In a natural setting, without artificial light, perversely dissecting beauty, the artist reveals what is often hidden. A permanence that cannot be altered by superficial.
Each photograph depicts "the self" - the person behind the camera, as well as the subject, with all their unique features. The models in Danny's work are not just faceless bodies, even when the subject’s head is not in the frame. Their individuality flows in the texture of their skin, the bones showing through it, the bites on their lips.

Sofia Volkova is a curator based in Amsterdam. 'My passion for art has always led me to work in the cultural industry. When organizing exhibitions I strive for a holistic approach, where every small element works towards the big picture and cannot be reduced to particulars. This makes the exhibition an art in itself. I am particularly interested in highlighting the layers of meaning in everyday life that are often overlooked.'
